Equipment & Inverter Compatibility

The Battery Has to Work With the Solar and Electrical System You Already Own.

Existing-solar battery projects are not all wired the same way. Inverter type, solar architecture, available equipment, manufacturer requirements and whether the system is AC- or DC-coupled can affect the design.

We also look at shutdown equipment, disconnects, transfer or backup equipment, monitoring, communications and how the proposed battery will operate when utility power is present or absent.

Older solar can sometimes be incorporated successfully. In other cases, an aging inverter or unsupported equipment may need to be addressed first.

Battery Backup & the Main Panel

A Battery Does Not Automatically Mean You Need a Larger Electrical Service.

The main panel must be evaluated, but a service upgrade should be based on actual equipment, capacity, interconnection requirements and future loads — not used as an automatic add-on to a battery project.

In many cases, yes. Compatibility depends on the inverter, solar architecture, electrical panel, available space, equipment support, utility requirements and the backup strategy you want.

Should I repair an older solar system before adding a battery?

If the existing system is underproducing, the inverter is failing, monitoring is offline or electrical faults are present, those issues should be understood before designing storage around the system.

Will a solar battery keep my whole house running during an outage?

That depends on the battery system's power and energy capacity, the connected loads, how long the outage lasts and whether solar can recharge the battery. Some homes use essential-load backup while others are designed for broader backup.

How long will a home battery last during an outage?

There is no single runtime for every home. Runtime depends on stored energy, the loads being powered, solar production, weather and how much energy the household uses during the outage.

Do I need a main panel upgrade before adding a battery?

Not automatically. The panel and service should be evaluated for condition, capacity, breaker space and the proposed battery/solar configuration. A panel upgrade should only be included when the actual project requires it.

Can battery backup work with an EV charger?

Yes, but EV charging is a significant electrical load and should be considered during battery and panel planning. Whether the EV is backed up during an outage is a separate design decision.

Can battery storage reduce my PG&E bill?

It may help some homeowners use more stored solar or shift when they use grid energy, but results depend on rate plan, solar production, battery settings, household usage and system design. We do not promise a specific bill reduction without reviewing the home.

Are battery rebates available?

Some customers may qualify for battery or resilience programs, including programs administered through California or PG&E, but eligibility and funding change. Current program rules should be verified for the specific customer before making a purchase decision.

Will adding a battery change my existing solar billing status?

That depends on the existing interconnection, proposed equipment and how the project is configured. Legacy solar customers should have the battery design and interconnection path reviewed before changes are made so the project does not rely on assumptions about tariff treatment.
