Solar Repair That Goes Beyond the Panels
Most solar problems are not caused by the panels themselves.
Many issues start with the equipment behind the system — the inverter, wiring, grounding, monitoring, disconnects, breakers, or the way the solar ties into your home’s electrical system.
That is where experience matters.
Dollens Electric is not just a solar company. We are licensed electrical contractors with solar experience. That means we can look at the entire system, not just one piece of it.
We test before we recommend.
We verify before we repair.
And we explain what is happening before any work moves forward.
Dollens Electric Is Licensed for Solar and Electrical Work
Solar repair often crosses into electrical repair.
That is why licensing matters.
Dollens Electric holds California C-46 Solar, C-10 Electrical, and B General Building licenses. This allows us to diagnose and repair the full system — from panels and inverters to the electrical infrastructure supporting them.
For homeowners, that means fewer handoffs, fewer delays, and fewer situations where one contractor blames another part of the system.
We can evaluate the solar equipment, the electrical connection, the panel, and the home’s overall electrical condition.
That is often the difference between a temporary fix and a repair that actually solves the problem.

Common Solar Problems We Diagnose
If your system is showing any of these signs, it should be checked:
- Solar system not producing power
- Solar panels producing less than expected
- Inverter error code
- Monitoring app not reporting
- Sudden increase in your utility bill
- Solar battery not charging
- Partial system shutdown
- Breaker or disconnect issues
- Ground fault or wiring concern
- System installed by a company that no longer responds
- SolarEdge, Enphase, SMA, Fronius, or Tesla Powerwall issues
Some problems are simple. Others take deeper testing. Either way, the first step is knowing what is actually wrong.
Solar Not Producing? You May Be Losing Power Every Day
A solar system that is not producing correctly does not sit still.
It reduces your return on investment, increases your utility bill, and can place added stress on other parts of the system.
We regularly see small issues turn into larger repairs because they were ignored or misdiagnosed early. Inverter faults, wiring problems, failed monitoring, and electrical defects can all get worse over time.
The sooner the system is tested, the better chance you have of fixing the issue before it becomes more expensive.
Get a Real Diagnosis — Not a Guess
Solar problems often look simple from the outside.
The system is not producing.
The inverter shows an error.
The app stopped reporting.
The bill went up.
But the cause is not always obvious.
That is why we do not start by guessing. We start by testing.
Our process is designed to find the source of the issue, not just replace the most obvious part. In many cases, proper diagnosis prevents unnecessary repairs and avoids replacing expensive equipment that was not actually the problem.
You will know what we found, what it means, and what your options are before any repair is approved.
Real Solar Repair Experience
Dollens Electric has handled solar repair work involving inverter error codes, manufacturer coordination, warranty replacement parts, full inverter replacement, and system performance verification.
In one recent solar repair, our technician diagnosed a failed electronic board inside a solar inverter, worked directly with the inverter manufacturer, coordinated replacement equipment, installed the new inverter, and returned to verify the system was producing properly.
That is the kind of repair process homeowners need when a solar system fails.
Not a guess.
Not a quick part swap.
A real diagnosis and a proper repair.
Why Many Solar Companies Can’t Fix the Real Problem
Many solar companies are set up to install panels or replace equipment.
That does not always mean they are equipped to diagnose the electrical reason a system failed.
A solar issue may involve:
- inverter failure
- wiring defects
- grounding problems
- breaker issues
- monitoring failures
- panel or service limitations
- failed disconnects
- poor original installation work
When the issue is electrical, it needs to be handled by someone qualified to test and repair electrical systems.
That is where Dollens Electric is different.
We approach solar repair the same way we approach electrical work: carefully, methodically, and with safety first.
Orphaned Solar Systems
If your original solar installer is no longer in business, not answering the phone, or unwilling to service your system, you are not alone.
We regularly help homeowners with orphaned solar systems.
These are systems that were installed by another contractor but no longer have reliable support. Sometimes the installer closed. Sometimes they only handle new installs. Sometimes they simply stop responding after the warranty period.
Dollens Electric can evaluate and repair solar systems even if we did not install them.
As a licensed contractor, we can inspect the system, identify the issue, and help bring it back online safely.
Josh was upfront about the extended wait time for solar inverter parts, which I appreciated. A few weeks later, he came back—not with just the replacement board, but with a completely brand new inverter that the manufacturer had sent out. He explained that the cost would be slightly higher due to the full inverter installation, but I was more than happy with that outcome considering the upgrade.
The level of dedication and professionalism was impressive. Josh completed the solar inverter installation in the pouring rain and even had to return for a follow-up visit when the system didn’t immediately come online. Again, he was out there troubleshooting in the rain without hesitation. On his final visit, he went a step further and checked the solar panel system performance, making sure we were getting proper energy output and educating me on what to watch for with our 10-year-old solar panels.
If you’re looking for a reliable electrician, solar inverter repair, or solar system maintenance, I highly recommend Dollens Electric. Josh went above and beyond every step of the way, and it’s rare to find that level of service and commitment. As a bonus, I’d recommend Josh specifically—not just because we share the same name, but because he truly delivered exceptional customer service and expertise.
Not sure about what happened with the 1-star reviews they received on Yelp because this local family owned business is well run, honest and very talented. They are very skilled and no, not cheap, but they charge a fair price--we got several quotes and they were all similar. Want it done right the first time? These are the guys to hire. Thank you Jason, Josh, Elijah, Brian and Josephine - you're now in our contact list as My Awesome Electrician too!
We truly appreciate your trust in Dollens Electric and look forward to helping you again whenever you need us.
Projects Completed:
-Electric water heater installation
-Circuit breaker panel upgrade
-Electric dryer wiring and connection
From the initial consultation, it was clear I was working with a true professional. They took the time to explain each project in detail, answered all my questions patiently, and provided transparent pricing with no hidden fees.
What stood out most:
The water heater installation was flawless. They ensured everything was up to code, properly grounded, and functioning perfectly. The attention to safety details gave me complete peace of mind.
The circuit breaker upgrade was handled expertly. They assessed my home's electrical needs, recommended the right capacity, and completed the work efficiently while keeping the disruption to my daily routine minimal.
For the dryer connection, they ran wiring cleanly and professionally, ensuring proper voltage and a safe, reliable connection. Everything was tested thoroughly before they considered the job complete.
Throughout all three projects, they maintained a clean work area, showed up on time, and demonstrated exceptional craftsmanship. I'll definitely be using them for all future electrical needs!

Came back from out of town on a Friday evening to find the garage without power.
Jason from Dollens walked me step by step through all the trouble shooting over the phone to spot the issue and resolve it within minutes.
I am going back to them for all my Electrical nees!
Still my go to electrical contractor. On time, plenty of communication, professional.
Converting from propane to an electric BBQ (firewise change).
Needed a new outlet on a 20 amp circuit that had an old 15 amp style socket. These are the guys I trust to keep us safe.
Update 9/2020 - Upgraded some thermostat wiring for me with a difficult routing. Professional and quick.
Update - Jason and Josh again came through for me. In the midst of a heat wave, they were able to come to the other end of the county and fix an electrical problem at my mother's house. Got the outlets for the portable AC and lift chair back working and made the wiring safer to boot.
Original - Could not ask for better. Jason installed a new 40 amp circuit and an EVo charger for our car. (No more slow 110 charging. Yeah!) While working in our breaker panel he noted a dangerous situation left by a previous contractor who upgraded our air conditioning.
(Side note kind of disappointing the inspector didn't notice that the other contractor put in a bigger breaker on a wire that was too small. Luckily the wire insulation had just started to bubble and it didn't catch fire.)
Within a week they were able to fit us in to replace the faulty circuit as well as rewire our garage lighting to eliminate some creative but scary runs of extension cords and re-purposed outlets. Now I have bright lights and when I look up, I don't see wires draped everywhere.
We connected with Jason of Dollens Electric through our equally excellent general contractor Dan Mackey. (Who by the way had nothing to do with the faulty circuit or the creative garage lighting.)
Lastly a thank you to Jason's son Josh who got to do the crawling under the house.
Thanks Maggie and Jim!!!
I had a hard time finding a contractor who wanted to install a power meter for dynamic energy monitoring over an expensive DCC. On my first call with them they recommended an Emporia Pro which is the cheapest option for dynamic load management, so I knew that they had the best for the customer in mind. I decided to go with Wallbox's offering instead; although I picked a less common method for dynamic load management Joshua had no issues wiring everything and it was great to see that he took in my input instead of just telling me I had to install a costly DCC. I also liked that he already had a lot of prior experience installing Wallbox's car charger.
Thank you for an amazing install. Support Local!
I was pleased when they briefly reviewed an installation manual to make sure they remembered exactly how the brand worked. It was obvious Joshua already knew how to make the installation but he doubled checked anyway. (I'm glad I'm not the only person who still refers to a manual.)
Call/use them; you won't be sorry.

Thank you for your kind words! We're glad to hear that you had a great experience with us. Our team at Dollens Electric is always ready to help with any electrical problems. If you ever need assistance in the future, don't hesitate to give us a call. Thanks again!
Excellent communication and professional!
Highly recommend!
Jason seemed to know the possible cause for the problem when I told him that the parts of the house were losing power gradually, and he was right!! He came out on the same day and fixed the problem (burnt crimp in junction box in the garage) within an hour!! Excellent!

They went above board to make sure every thing was done to perfection !
They give an accurate read on what needs
to be done. They are a safety-first company
that shows up energetic & work...

When Solar Repair Reveals Bigger Electrical Issues
Sometimes solar repair uncovers larger electrical problems.
We may find an outdated electrical panel, overloaded circuits, missing surge protection, improper grounding, damaged wiring, or a system that was never installed correctly from the beginning.
When that happens, we explain it clearly.
You will not be pressured into unnecessary work. But you will know what we found and why it matters.
If your solar issue connects back to your home’s electrical panel, backup power setup, or future battery plans, we can help you understand the best path forward.
.
Solar Repair Process
We keep the process straightforward.
First, we schedule a diagnostic visit. Systems that are fully offline are prioritized when possible.
Once on site, we test the system and look at the components involved — not just the panels. Depending on the issue, this may include the inverter, wiring, monitoring, breakers, disconnects, and electrical connection points.
After testing, we explain what we found and provide pricing before repair work begins.
Many repairs can be completed during the same visit when possible. If parts are needed, we explain the next steps clearly.
Solar Repair Costs in San Jose
Solar repair costs depend on the issue.
Some problems are simple and can be identified quickly. Others require more detailed troubleshooting, especially when the issue involves inverter faults, wiring problems, monitoring failures, or equipment replacement.
Solar troubleshooting is performed on site and is based on time. Because these systems involve multiple components, the goal is to identify the exact problem before recommending a repair.
You will know what you are paying for and why.
