Subpanel or Main Service Upgrade?

More Breaker Space Is Not the Same as More Electrical Capacity.

This is the most important distinction on a subpanel project.

  • The main service has enough electrical capacity for the planned loads.
  • The existing panel needs additional breaker/distribution space.
  • Circuits need to be grouped closer to a garage, ADU, shop or remodel.
  • A new feeder and local distribution panel make the layout cleaner and more serviceable.

A Service Upgrade May Be Needed When…

  • The home's calculated demand exceeds what the existing service can reasonably support.
  • The main service equipment itself is damaged, obsolete or unsuitable for the planned work.
  • Large future loads make the existing service a meaningful limitation.
  • The project requires a different service configuration, not merely more branch-circuit spaces.
A subpanel does not “add amps” to the utility service. It redistributes the capacity that is available. That is why the main service and proposed loads are reviewed before the subpanel is sized.

What is an electrical subpanel?

A subpanel is a secondary distribution panel supplied from another panel. It contains breakers for a group of branch circuits but does not independently increase the utility service capacity feeding the home.

When should I add a subpanel?

A subpanel can make sense when you need additional circuit distribution for a garage, ADU, remodel, workshop, EV charging or future loads and the upstream electrical service can support the planned demand.

Can a subpanel help if my main panel is full?

It can provide additional breaker/distribution space when the main service and equipment are otherwise suitable. A load and panel review should come first because available breaker spaces and available electrical capacity are not the same thing.

Does a subpanel increase the amperage available to my house?

No. The subpanel redistributes the capacity available from the existing service. If the home needs more total service capacity, a main service upgrade may be a separate project.

What size subpanel do I need?

The size should be based on the circuits and loads it will serve, feeder design, upstream capacity and future plans. A standard size should not be chosen before the load plan is understood.

Do I need a permit for a new subpanel?

Can I add an EV charger to a subpanel?

Potentially. The subpanel feeder, upstream service capacity, breaker space and desired charging rate all need to support the EV load. A subpanel does not bypass the need for a load review.

Will the new circuits be labeled?

Yes. A clear circuit directory is part of making the new panel serviceable and understandable after the installation is complete.
